February 2010

Helen Gerlach, Editor

Hot off the press!  We’ve just spent a fantastic three days at International Confex, the UK's leading event for event organisers at Earl’s Court.  It was brilliant to see so many of our current members visiting the IPA stand and to welcome new members who took advantage of the Confex ‘show special’ for joining us on the day.

The show lived up to our high expectations and was packed full of quality suppliers to the events industry, inspirational venue suggestions and outstanding educational seminars which attracted those all-important CPD points. And with PA Day taking place just yesterday, this was the ideal way to meet other PAs, take advantage of what was on offer and keep up-to-date with developments in the events industry.

If you weren’t able to make it to our stand this time, make sure you set time aside for our next high-profile event, RSVPA in April. Watch this space for more details!

IPA London Regional Event

IPA London eventThe IPA London region held its first event of the new year on the 11th February. The evening was hailed as a resounding success! Over 50 members and non-members joined our London Regional Co-ordinator, Emma Hicks together with IPA Corporate member, Frank Hirth, who provided an outstanding venue, refreshments and a sumptuous buffet.

Siobhan Brown, Head of Sales at Hotel Chocolat and guest speaker, delivered a dynamic presentation called 'Branding from the Inside Out'.

Emma Hicks, London Regional Co-ordinator said, "It was fantastic to see so many familiar and new faces. We have received some really positive feedback from members and non-members alike, which is testament to how much everyone enjoyed the evening.

She continued, “ I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the team at Frank Hirth, especially Lisa Holland and Lisa Usher, for their support and guidance to help make this event so successful.  Also, I would like to thank our sponsors, Welltec and Arbonne, who provided guests with some fabulous treatments and prizes".

IPA London eventAll members received a personalised CPD Certificate for attendance. Hotel Chocolat's story has already inspired many members to take action within their own organisation - to help boost morale, increase productivity, broaden their job role and level of responsibility.

IPA in Belfast

BelfastHelen Nilen, IPA Regional co-ordinator for Northern Ireland, organised the first IPA event of 2010 on Wednesday 10th February at Weavers Court Business Park, Belfast.

Speaker Philip Wilson from ‘InternetSense’, a company focused on the Northern Ireland IT industry for over 10 years, spoke on ‘Social Media & Social Networking - 'It is all about you & me!'. He gave an excellent presentation on internet developments that have led to the ‘real time web’ and the widespread use of social networking for both personal pleasure and business matters.

Guests heard about the importance of good practice and correct etiquette; how to experiment personally before using social networking professionally and the need for good planning to identify the relevant audience. As key points to remember, Philip highlighted the value of being transparent and honest, not being afraid of sharing information, contributing in a meaningful way and being proactive in building business relationships.

Helen Nilen commented, “Our attendees varied from those who had no experience of social networking through to one person who ‘tweets’ every day on behalf of their employer! We all appreciated Philip’s presentation and could really see the potential of using social networking for business.” She continued, “Philip was most complimentary about PAs and Administrators, describing us as the people who got things done!”

We look forward to welcoming IPA members to our next event, which will be announced soon in The Professional Administrator.

Philip Wilson is a Director of ‘InternetSense’, a company which has been part of the IT Industry in Northern Ireland for some 10 years, primarily with 1-2-1 and group coaching for some 300+ individuals as well as small and medium sized enterprises.
